A few weeks ago we had an itch to get out of the house, but with our current budget, ideas were limited. While at dinner with my parents, we decided we'd dedicate our Sunday afternoon to an adventure around the Peninsula. Neither of us had done this before, so it was new to both of us!
Our alarm went off at the un-holy hour of 6am (very un-holy on a weekend!) but we were out of bed, eager for our day to begin by 7am. We headed up to Edmonds to catch the 7:50 ferry to Kingston but were stopped short when we discovered the first Sunday ferry didn't leave till 8:40am
...apparently we weren't reading with our magnifying glass to see the tiny print at the bottom of the page.
Regardless, this gave us time for breakfast in Edmonds before beginning our journey. The first set of pictures below are from the first half of the day. We traveled along the north end of the peninsula through Port Angeles and stopped for a hike in the Olympic National Park.
From here we headed to the coast via Forks.
Yes, Forks was FULL of Twilight memorabilia (in every window of every store). I can only assume Forks will forever be branded like Roslyn is to Northern Exposure.
A short drive from here took us to Rialto Beach; stunning and desolate.
I can only imagine the keggers thrown out here. I'm sure Forks High School would have put our high school parties at Gasworks to shame!
(this beach was also a Mecca of skipping stones.....perfect for filling my "skipping stones" bucket for the wedding)
It was really windy by the shore, but we found reprieve behind a large fallen tree; a perfect little table for two.
The final stop on our journey was a beach 30 minutes down the coast from the one above. I forget the name (I'll look it up and fill this in), but it had stunning views and large rock formations jutting out from the water....like our very own 12 Apostles right here in Washington state.
Take that Australia!
Okay, so maybe not The 12 Apostles, but pretty awesome none the less.
Alright, off to Aberdeen to head back home!
While I don't think we're the road warriors we thought we were, we did enjoy time together exploring a new part of the state. Sometimes we forget the many beautiful and unexplored areas right here in our own backyard.
Till next time, happy trails....
