A Very Americana Fourth of July

This year was one for the books!

Long ago, in a far away, kidless land, we spent Fourth of July holidays at The Clayton's apartment on Dexter watching fireworks on Lake Union.  Much has changed since then - the most significant being a missed sense of festivity on the 4th.

But this year we finally felt back in the spirit with a delightful weekend of neighborhood celebrations, and a trip to Alderbrook for the Thunder on the Canal firework show!

The idea to head to Alderbook was on a whim, just weeks before the holiday weekend, so the fact that we scored a room was impressive.

We had such a blast (and we've already booked for next year!)

The resort usually celebrates on the 3rd (as was the case this year) and the day is chalked full of fun: activities for the kids on the cottage lawn, a band, food and drinks galore, and an amazing firework show to cap the night off right.

We lucked out with a room that faced the water, so the boys were able to sleep while Kevin, Abigail, and I cozied up on the deck for the big show.  Abigail could hardly keep her eyes open, but she was impressed none the less  :)

Monday morning, we participated in the 4th of July day parade complete with goodies for the kids, Uncle Sam and a marching band to lead the way, and a few Gates family members celebrating with us on the front lawn (namely Bill and Bill Sr!)

Here are some pictures from the weekend:

I am so happy we did this.  I love the idea of coming back each year with the kids for the 4th, and I hope it's a tradition that sticks.

I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday weekend.

Happy Fourth of July!

20 week ultrasound

Yesterday Kevin and I went to our 20 week ultrasound.  Everything looked great and the two questions still lingering in my mind were confirmed. 1) Yes, it's a boy! 2) Nope, I'm not having twins  :) I've heard it a million times: with each pregnancy you pop a little sooner, but when I was in maternity pants at 12 weeks, I thought surely there must be two in there... Here are some pictures, if you'd like to see. During George's 20 week ultrasound Kevin admitted he'd almost fallen asleep, so I will admit: I had a hard time staying awake this time  :) But we did get to see him in 4D ultrasound which we've never done before, so that was really cool. So fun! After our appointment we went to breakfast at Salish Lodge and took my first Month of Bumps picture. (cue shrills of excitement from everyone eager to see belly pics for the next 4 months!) Before taking the picture I (lovingly) assured Kevin that yes, we would be taking...

Two!

Yesterday you turned two; I can hardly believe it! Two year pictures, wearing a dress I wore when I was little You are such a funny, sweet little girl, and I love seeing your personality unfold more each day.  This last month you've really started coming out of your shell and love making people laugh; whether tickling "gee gee gee gee" , or joking around (the other day you took a doll house high chair and pretended to sit in it...all the while looking back at me smiling and laughing like "look, I'm going to try and sit in this teeny highchair!" ), you sure know how to make us laugh. Music is your first love.  Beach Boys Greatest Hits is the current album favorite , so we listen to it in the car every day.  Mainly to Barbara Ann (you always request "ba ba ba" ).  You also love listening to Swiss music with Grandma and having Dad play "Abigail Loves Cheese" on his guitar when he gets home at night. Schwingfest is this Saturday a...

five months

Happy #5, Benny Boy! You have grown up so much this past month, and in the sweetest ways possible.  You adore a good tickle or friendly face and can't seem to soak in the world around you enough; every time I look at you, your eyes are quickly scanning the room, working hard to put all the pieces together. A smart little guy, you are  :) This month I moved you to the nursery.  It was becoming increasingly difficult to put Abigail and George to bed at night, but putting them together in a room has made bedtime simple - they love being together.  As such, you now have your own room!  It's so sweet being back in a nursery with a little one.  Since George was in our bedroom until he was 5 months, then living at Gma and Gpa's for another 6 months, he wasn't in his own room until his first birthday.  So, in many ways, having you in a nursery reminds me so much of my first time around the Motherhood block, and many nights it fills me with such joy just...
